This graphic is best suited for someone on a computer or tablet playing around with the information to figure out what demographic in each state leans toward a particular political party This would be less useful as a standalone graphic that someone walks past as a poster. What is useful is how the title is easily recognizable at a glance and if you want to the read the graphic more carefully the reader realizes why this particular information is shown.

  2. This graphic works well in its use of clearly established, easily identifiable colors to quickly show trends in voting patterns in the 2012 Presidential race. In class, Sonja mentioned that this graphic was interactive, and more information is available. What can be seen initially is purely analysis of the 2012 results, but scrolling over each data gives recent historical trends, giving the information further depth. In taking that into account, this graphic seems to be appropriately developed for a website. However, it doesn’t seem that it would take a great change to have this graphic used for a book or poster – the explanation of each subtopic and the clarity of the chart would need to be enhanced, but the basic framework seems transferrable.

    • Good point about adaptability, Dylan. This can be an important asset to an information graphic: the ability to be legible and useful at both expanded and compressed for use in different formats.

  3. This is a great graphic if you can access the website. Once on the site, you can browse the long list of indicators. What I really like about the graphic is that once you’ve understood what the graphic design represents, you can understand what the rest of the indicators are representing really quickly. Also, the more intense shading of red or blue to represent more of the vote share is very effective, and allows the viewer to browse the indicators without actually looking at the numbers. There is A LOT of information in a relatively small space. Very cool!

    • Yes, the color tint is well used in communicating a proportional breakdown of the vote and providing a quick basis for comparison between states. What do you see first, the color of each block or the number printed on it?

  4. This graphic is highly effective at conveying the information due to the presence of clear titles above the graphs. It uses the standard red and blue colors to identify republicans and democrats, further simplifying the information. The layout is free of clutter and sticks to the relevant information. The colors are not especially bold though, so the graphic is not as effective at capturing the passing viewer.

    • The brief, bold and visible titles are helpful, especially in a series like this, where each row is measuring the same type of quantity, and there is a super-headline that frames the entire graphic. You’re right to point out that the lack of extraneous information also helps to keep the whole page–which carries a ton of information–very clear and legible.

  5. The information presented is easy to understand. I enjoy simple quick graphics that provide something from a different angle. I’m sure the web version is better. as Lennie said, but there is some great tidbits of a few states and their 2012 voting record.

  6. Some other strengths about this graphic: its use of grid, not only to align and draw parallelism between polling topics, but also within each graphic; how the typeface is set in a light gray, indicating inactivity which can be activated by rolling your cursor over each item; then, the subtle highlight, outline and inverted-color (white) type that is provided to each item when you roll over it to see that additional historic polling data Dylan referenced; the description of methodology at the bottom of the graphic; the ability to click the checkbox up top to “Size boxes by share of the state’s electorate”—a very nice feature that adds scalar visualization to the data.
